Project summary
Friends of the Center is a volunteer effort to enhance this unique opportunity we have on our coast. Through outreach and education we can bring marine science into the lifes of our residences and visitors. This can only be done through volunteerism and dedication to the youth.
What 'it' is
Public outreach to promote marine science education in and around the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I have been involved as a docent for the past year in the sanctuary's Coastal Discovery Center and have been the creator of many outreach and educational programs that are not funded. Myself and other docents have donated 5000 hours in this year and want to continue this effort.
Describe your community
Our coast is truly unique and special with the abundance of wildlife and natural resources relatively untouched. Our community is largely retired giving us a large pool of volunteers dedicated to the education and interpretation of these resources
What's your plan
The themes of the Coastal Discovery Center are "connecting land and sea" and "partners in protection". The unique partnership between Federal and State agencies has given us a central location to build this environmental education center and as docents it is up to us to use it to it's fullest capability. As a docent I have created most of the outreach material. I have spearheaded all committees including education, finance, outreach and display. I maintain their Aquarium, all exhibits, designed and maintain 2 web sites. these are but a few of my duties with the center. Currently I am working on starting a ROV competition in our area to bring modern marine science into our classrooms. I have logged in approx. 1000 hours in less than 1 year and want to continue being able to give this coast my fullest attention.
